Spiti Wildlife Division consists of 3 Protected areas, namely- Chandertal Wildlife Sanctuary, Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary and Pin Valley National Park, and 2 wildlife ranges namely- Kaza Wildlife Range and Tabo Wildlife Range. The total area of Spiti Wildlife Division is 7591 Sq. Kms.

The Spiti Wildlife division has total 4 ranges, 7 blocks and 23 beats. The wildlife division’s headquarter is located at Divisional Forest office, Kaza. Infrastructure-wise the division has 6 trekker hut/inspection hut facilities for transit accommodation located at Tabo, Kaza, Hansa, Losar, Kungri and Mudh. Moreover, the division also supplies fuelwood to people of Spiti valley to meet the heating needs during winters through its 9 fuelwood depots located across Spiti valley area.
The Spiti division was part of Lahaul forest division till 1984. Post 1984, it was created as a separate forest division. The conservation history of Spiti Wildlife division started in 1987 with declaration of Pin Valley National Park under Section 35 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. This was followed with notification of Kibber Wildlife Sanctuary in 1992 and Chandertal Wildlife Sanctuary in 2007 under Section 26 of Wildlife Protection Act, 1972. The Chandertal Wildlife Sanctuary was also declared as a Ramsar Site of Wetland of International Importance under Ramsar convention 1972. Subsequently, Project Snow Leopard began in 2009 and continued till 2014, under which landscape-level management plan was prepared for Upper Spiti Landscape (c. 4000 Sq. Kms area) and landscape level conservation efforts were started in the division. This has since been continued through different central and state plan schemes.
