Eco development Committees

Eco Development committees (EDCs) form an integrated part of management of protected areas and areas surround in terms of wildlife conservation & management of human-wildlife conflicts. Spiti Wildlife Division endeavours to  make communities a partner towards achieving the objective of biodiversity conservation and to provide alternative livelihoods to the communities living in the Spiti valley region. The Spiti Snow Leopard Conservation Society (SSLCS) created in 2016 for the landscape based conservation, also aims to form village level wildlife conservation committees under the society’s framework.

Spiti Wildlife Division has so far created and registered 2 eco-development committees in Chicham & Kibber under Participatory Forest Management (PFM) rules, 2000 of Government of Himachal Pradesh. These committees are also registered under Himachal Pradesh Societies Registration Act, 2006. MoU has been signed with these committees for participatory forest & wildlife management and microplans for the period of 5 years have been framed in consultation with committees to undertake wildlife conservation & village development related activities. More such EDCs are planned to be formed in near future.
