About Spiti Snow Leopard Conservation Society
Spiti Snow Leopard Conservation Society (SSLCS) was established in 2016. The SSLCS has overall responsibility for management of conservation initiatives within the entire Spiti Wildlife Division, which is also a Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve. The SSLCS provides fund advances, empowerment, flexible administrative procedure and Governing body structure, which in turn provides continuity of funding across fiscal years, renders managerial autonomy at the Landscape level, and helps to ensure the flexibility required for a process-oriented approach.
- Spiti Snow Leopard Conservation Society (SSLCS) was established after obtaining in-principle approval of Government of HP and was registered under Himachal Pradesh Societies Registration Act 2006 on 26th March 2016.
- The SSLCS has overall responsibility for management of conservation initiatives within the entire Spiti Wildlife Division, which is also a Cold Desert Biosphere Reserve.
- The SSLCS in envisaged as an autonomous and independent body with the main aim of biodiversity conservation through community-based efforts in the concerned Snow leopard landscapes.
- It also aims to safeguard natural environment, promote ecological & economic development in the community, staff of the snow leopard landscape. And strives to promote research, environmental education & training and policy advocacy in the above and related fields.
- The society also aims to support functioning of Village-level Wildlife Conservation Committees (VWCCs).
Objectives of Spiti Snow Leopard Conservation Society
The society shall be an autonomous and independent body with the main aim of biodiversity conservation through community-based efforts in the concerned Snow leopard landscapes. It shall also aim to safeguard natural environment, promote ecological & economic development in the community, staff of the snow leopard landscape. It shall strive to promote research, environmental education & training and policy advocacy in the above and related fields.
Organizational Structure of society
Governing Body:- Chaired by CCF Wildlife (South), comprises of official members who are Head of offices & Depts in Spiti as well as non-official members from relevant stakeholders, DFO (Wildlife) Spiti at Kaza acts as Member Secretary. Governing Body has following powers & functions-
- To review implementation of management of snow leopard landscape & give overall policy guidance & direction for efficient functioning.
- To consider & approve the balance sheet & audited accounts of the society.
- To consider & approve Annual report prepared by Executive committee.
- To amend the rules of society.
- To secure effective coordination between different departments and other government/ government aided institutions for achieving objectives of the society.
Executive Committee:- Chaired by ADC Kaza, comprises of official members who are Head of offices & Depts in Spiti, DFO (Wildlife) Spiti at Kaza acts as Member Secretary. Executive committee has following powers & functions-
- To enter into written agreement with other public or private institutions for furtherance of its
objectives. - To raise funds, secure & accept endowments, grants-in-aid, donations or gifts to the society.
- To acquire by purchase or gift or otherwise, any movable or immovable property from
government & other public or private individuals. - To consider & approve Annual Plan of Operations (APO) & Budget.
- To sort out problems in the implementation of management in the landscape.
- Full powers to accord administrative & financial sanctions for all other expenditures.
- To examine annual report of the society.
